Sleep is a vital aspect to living a long, healthy life. The benefits of getting a full seven hours of sleep per night vary immensely from improved immunity to lower risk of heart disease, as well as lower risk of diabetes and obesity. Despite the numerous benefits of a full night’s rest, many Americans do not obtain the optimal hour count of sleep.
May is National Better Sleep Month and as a part of promoting awareness for better sleep for our patients, we are discussing a major issue that unknowingly affects millions of Americans (and their partners!) – Sleep Apnea. Sleep Apnea occurs when the patient has long pauses in breath or even stops breathing while asleep. The most apparent symptom of sleep apnea is loud snoring and other common symptoms include heartburn, fatigue, rapid weight gain, etc. If left untreated, sleep apnea can be detrimental to a patient’s health increasing the risk for heart disease, stroke, obesity, and diabetes among others.
If you feel that you or your loved one is at risk for sleep apnea or for more information, please feel free to give our office a call to fully assess your case and stop the snoring!
